🎵 Everything About Songs and Band Songs

Learn about all the features available for songs: links, gig documents, YouTube videos, recordings, splits, and more.

Adding Links to Songs

Songs can have multiple types of links that enhance your workflow:

Audio Links

  • Reference Recordings - MP3, M4A, WAV files
  • Promoted Recordings - Recordings you've made and promoted as the default audio
  • External Links - Links to SoundCloud, Bandcamp, etc.

Audio links are used in the Setlist Player and can be played during rehearsals.

YouTube Links

  • Add YouTube URLs to songs
  • Videos appear in YouTube Playlist view on setlists
  • Great for watching performances or tutorials

MIDI Links

  • Link to MIDI files for backing tracks
  • MIDI Playlist view plays through all MIDI files in order
  • Perfect for practice with backing tracks

PDF Links

  • Link to external PDF chord charts or lead sheets
  • Accessible in Rehearsal View
  • Can be downloaded or viewed in browser

Gig Documents

Create chord charts and lyrics directly in The Band Plan:

Creating Gig Documents

  1. Go to a song's detail page
  2. Click "Create Gig Document"
  3. Choose document type:
    • Chord Chart - Formatted with sections (Verse, Chorus, Bridge)
    • Lyrics - Text-only lyrics sheet
    • Combined - Chords and lyrics together
  4. Format your document with sections
  5. Save and it's automatically linked to the song

Using Gig Documents

  • Rehearsal View - Access all gig documents while practicing
  • Music Stand View - Full-screen view for performing
  • Print View - Generate PDFs for offline use
  • Gig View - Public shareable view with audio player

Song Recordings

Record individual songs and enhance them:

Recording a Song

  1. Use Quick Record → Select "Record a Song"
  2. Choose the song you want to record
  3. Record your performance
  4. Review on the preview page
  5. Upload when ready

After Recording

  • Normalize - Adjust volume levels to -1.3 dB peak for consistent playback
  • Trim - Edit start/end points to remove silence or unwanted audio
  • Promote to Reference Recording - Makes it the default audio link
  • Add to Album - Include in a published album

Recording Splits

When you record a full set, you can split it into individual songs:

Splitting Process

  1. Record a full setlist
  2. Go to the split page after recording
  3. Use the waveform editor to select song segments
  4. Assign each segment to a song
  5. Process splits to create individual song files

Working with Splits

  • Trim Splits - Edit individual split recordings
  • Promote Splits - Make a split the reference recording for that song
  • Skip in Player - Hide unwanted splits from the Setlist Player
  • Delete Splits - Remove splits you don't need

Band Songs vs. Global Songs

Understanding the difference:

  • Global Songs - Public songs available to all bands
  • Band Songs - Songs added to your specific band's repertoire
  • Band songs can be private (originals) or public (covers)
  • Each band can have different links, gig docs, and recordings for the same song

Preferred Audio Selection

The Setlist Player uses this priority order:

  1. Your Preference - If you've set a preferred audio source
  2. Recording Splits - Songs from your setlist recordings
  3. Song Recordings - Individual song recordings you've made
  4. Audio Links - External links you've added

Tips for Success

  • Add multiple audio links - different versions for different contexts
  • Create gig documents for songs you perform regularly
  • Record and promote your best performances as reference recordings
  • Use splits from set recordings to build your audio library
  • Keep gig documents updated as arrangements change
